Heather's Story
  due date:  Sept. 2, 2003

A VERY POSITIVE STORY! At 20 weeks I was diagonosed with a very low lying placenta. I was scheduled for a follow-up ultrasound for 28 weeks. At that time it was confirmed that I had a complete placent previa and was told that I would need a c-section to deliver my son. Between the scheduling of the two ultrasounds I found this sight and read 90% of the stories. I was very alarmed and afraid as I had kept up a pretty good exercise regimen, doing yoga, walking 3 miles a day, etc., which seemed condusive to detaching my placenta and starting a bleeding episode. When my condition was confirmed I cut my activities WAY DOWN and at 30 weeks, put myself on bed rest for the duration of my pregnancy. (I was fortunate enough to have stopped working, in preparation to be a stay at home mom). My original due date was 9-2-03, but was scheduled for a c-section on August 24. I am pleased to say that I made it to August 24, without once having any bleeding and my son, Holden, was delivered perfectly healthy with an APGAR of 9,9. My placenta pulled away easily during the surgery and there were absolutely no complications! Today I am healing wonderfully and having a great time with my son. I don't know if other women with positive outcomes just don't bother to write their stories, but I wanted to let others out there know that a diagnosis of complete placenta previa doesn't necessarily mean you'll have major complicattions or delivery prematurely. I really think my 2 months of bed rest helped. STAY POSITIVE AND REST!!!

Gary's Story
  due date:  Nov 2003

My wife just died last week in Northwestern hospital from complications of a section due to bleeding from Placenta Previa.  I am still trying to understand what happened.  I have a living son 32 weeks premature, he is doing fine.  His name is Peter Alexander Newman, I will have to raise him without his mom.  Does anyone know how often women die from this problem?  Where would I find this information? Any help you can be would be great.

Thank you,
Gary Newman

Jenny's Story

due date:  6/26/03

I was diagnosed with placenta previa, bilobel placenta and vasa previa during my 22nd week of pregnancy.  I had some slight spotting at that time and that's why my doctor did a vaginal ultrasound to check things out.  I was put on 2 weeks of bed rest and had no more bleeding.  My doctors instructed me to remain on partial bed rest for the remainer of my pregnancy --- not to overdo it.  We had gone through infertility for many years, and lost a baby (miscarriage) a few years earlier.  We finally had success with insemination with this pregnancy, so this was a very emotional time for us, to say the least.  At 28 weeks, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, to further worry me and complicate matters.  At 33 weeks, I had a "bleed" in the middle of the night.  We immediately called my doctor and went to the Labor and Delivery department at the hospital.  The bleeding had stopped by the time we arrived at the hospital and a fetal monitor indicated that the baby was fine.  However, I was having about 10 contractions an hour.  I was admitted to the hospital and put on Magnesium Sulfate (a nasty little drug) and oral Procardia to keep the contractions at bay.  I was scheduled to be released a few days later, but I had another severe bleed and the doctors decided to keep me there until they delivered my baby by c-section.  I laid in the bed (with bathroom and shower priviledges) for four weeks.  I remained on the Procardia to control the contractions and did continue to have some contractions throughout the rest of my pregnancy.  I had an amnio at 35 1/2 weeks, but my baby's lungs were not mature yet.  I received two steroid injections.  I was scheduled for a repeat amnio the next week, but I decided that I couldn't go through the pain of another one, so the doctors said I had to make it to the middle of my 37th week and they would do a c-section at that time.  My c-section went great.  My baby was 6 lbs 0 oz, which was good for being early.  He scored 9 on both Apgar assessments, which is the highest rating
given on a c-section baby.  The umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck 3 times.  This in itself was risky, especially if I had not had a section.  I was very lucky to have such consciencious doctors and to be diagnosed so early on.  I know how lucky we are to have this baby.  He is a miracle indeed.
